Declan

Henry: Tell me he at least kissed you.

I chuckle, and turn Vivi’s cell phone facedown so I’m not tempted to read her messages. Even though they’re about me. I grin, a little too happy that she and Henry talk about me. Does Henry want us to get back together?

Maybe the guy I was jealous over is really on my side. Maybe I was too quick to judge their relationship.

The ring of Vivi’s cell interrupts my thoughts and I stare at it, debating. I’m not proud of it, but my curiosity wins, and I answer her phone.

“Henry.”

A pause. “Declan? Why’re you answering Viv’s phone. Is she okay? Tell me you guys finally got out of your own damn way and she’s just sleeping off her orgasmic bliss.”

Huh? I burst out in laughter. “What the hell are you talking about, man?”

“Damn. Y’all still haven’t done it?”

“Henry, it’s not like that between me and Vivi,” I fib, not wanting to kiss and tell.

“Yeah fucking right. Y’all know it should be.”

I clear my throat, both uncomfortable and amused by the turn this conversation has taken. “Well, I know that but Vivi…” I trail off. Last night, she definitely would have slept with me. But I don’t just want her body. I want all of her. Heart and soul and thoughts. Everything she holds back.

Henry laughs. “She still giving you a hard time, making you work for it?”

“That’s one way to say it.”

His laughter grows. “God, I love that girl.”

Me too. I love her so damn much, I don’t know how I existed this long without her. But I don’t say that. I just wait for Henry to keep talking, to give me something to work with. Since he’s her best friend and all.

Henry sighs, “You gotta be patient, man. Win back her trust. After y’all broke up…”

“I know.”

“You know what?” he asks cryptically, and I grin because Vivi was right, Henry is a true friend.

“I know about the baby. The…miscarriage.”

He blows out an exhale. “Finally. I’m glad she told you.”

“So am I. I had no idea. If I knew, you know I’d have come back.”

“I know,” Henry agrees. “And you did come back, remember? She just wouldn’t see you.”

“Yeah,” I scoff. “You know, I saw you guys.”

“What?”

“I came home my sophomore year of college. I saw you and Vivi training, with boxing gloves. She was laughing and I thought…”

“That we were together,” he finishes.

“Yes.”

“You’re a fucking idiot.”

I laugh.

“Viv’s only ever had eyes for you, Declan. I used to have to push her to go out on dates—”

I frown. Of course, Vivi dated but…I don’t really want to hear about.

“And the whole time, she compared the guy to you.”

That makes me smile. “She date a lot?”

Henry chuckles. “No way am I going there, man. Just, open your eyes, Declan. You’re getting a second chance. Use it.”

His words hit me hard. Because he’s right. A second chance, a fresh start. An opportunity to prove to Vivi that I’m the guy she once believed me to be. I was fooling myself if I ever thought my marriage to Vivi was motivated by a promise to Mr.
